What is an FBO account?
In vault storage, assets are often held “for the benefit of” a third party. For example, a precious metals dealer (the organization) may store gold on behalf of their customers (FBO account holders). Each customer gets their own FBO account to track their specific inventory.Properties
Addresses
Each FBO account can have multiple addresses of different types:
Addresses can be activated or deactivated. All address changes are tracked in the address history.
Org member access
Customer access to FBO account data is through Clerk organization membership. Organization admins invite members to the org; members then use the vault app (signed in with Clerk) to view inventory, request shipments, and manage addresses for accounts in their organization.Audit trail
FBO account changes are fully tracked, including:- Account creation
- Name, email, phone, and business name changes
- Max insured value and risk score changes
- Organization reassignment
- Account deletion
Lifecycle
- Created — An organization admin creates the FBO account. A welcome email is sent automatically.
- Active — The account is live and can hold inventory and receive shipments. Org members access it via Clerk org membership.
- Deleted — Soft-deleted. The account and its history remain in the system for audit purposes, but it can no longer hold active inventory.
